BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team used a huge second quarter on Saturday afternoon to top Mary Baldwin by a score of 78-51.

After a fairly even first quarter, the Knights (7-2) outscored the Fighting Squirrels (1-8) 33-9 in the second period to take control of the game and cruise to the win. The Knights forced 13 turnovers in the frame while wing Alexus Barnes scored 10 of her career-high 23 points.

The Knights' pressure defense forced the Fighting Squirrels into 36 turnovers on the game and held them to only 32.8% shooting from the field. On the offensive end, Southern Virginia shot only 35.4%, but an impressive 18 offensive rebounds helped supplement the shaky shooting.

Along with her career and game-high 23 points, Barnes also posted six rebounds and five steals, while forward Katie Garrish finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks. Fellow forward Shelby Butler ended with 12 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Angel Tuisavura had an incredible 10 steals to go along with her eight points.

The Knights take the floor again on Monday as Salem College comes to town for another non-conference matchup. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. on the new floor in Knight Sports Arena.
