Softball Swept by Christopher Newport University

Buena Vista, Va.—The Southern Virginia softball team fell today to Christopher Newport University in a conference double header 20-2 and 15-2 at Harvey-Dryden Field.

For the third and fourth game in a row the fourth inning turned to be fruitful for the Knights.

In game one Southern Virginia (0-9, 0-4 CAC) trailed 19-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth when a leadoff single from junior Annie Biggs. Shortstop Makenzie Cox stepped up next and singled to the centerfielder, who committed an error, which allowed Biggs to score and Cox to take second. A Jamie Pinkston groundball advanced Cox to third who scored on an RBI ground out by third baseman Makayla Brown.

In the circle senior Jamie Pinkston gave up 13 earned runs in her complete game with three strikeouts. 

Down by 14 in game two the Knights headed into the bottom of the fourth. Cox lead off the half inning with a double to left field, and advanced to third on a Brown single. A wild pitch would score Cox and advance Brown, who then scored on two passed balls. 

The Knights had two other hits in game two, Cox singled in the first inning and catcher Lainie Thompson hit her first double of the year in the bottom of the third. 

In game two Pinkston gave up seven earned runs in the 15-2 loss.

The Captains' (13-6, 2-0 CAC) second baseman Tori Clare had five RBIs on the day.
 

The Knights take the field again on Monday March 30 in a non-league pair at 3 and 5 p.m. in Buena Vista, Virginia against Maine-Presque Isle.
