BUENA VISTA, Va.-Playing under the lights for the first time at Harvey-Druden Field, the Southern Virginia University softball team lost both games against NCAA DII Davis & Elkins University, 11-2 and 12-2, Monday night in Buena Vista, Va.
"I am pleased with the overall effort of our team," said Southern Virginia head coach Duste Grawrock. "Jamie Pinkston and Cheyenne Hegsted played hard for us today, and Jamie threw harder than she has in the past.
"Cheyenne did a fantastic job eating up every ground ball that came her way, really taking away that left side."
The Senators lit the board first in both games and totaled 21 hits, 20 runs batted in and left 18 runners on base. Freshman Danielle Norton had her third homerun of the season and sophomore Kayla Whoolery had her first of the season in game two, The Senators took advantage of wild pitches and pass balls as they tallied 10 unearned runs through the two games.
McKenzie Packard went 3-4, one walk and a sac bunt to bump her to a .412 batting average, a .500 on base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage. Packard also had four stolen bases. Hegsted stepped up defensively and offensively as she went 2-2 in game two with her first homerun of the season and then bunted for a single.
After five innings in the circle Pinkston recorded three strikeouts, three walks and was pegged with the loss. Cassie Pacheco was in the circle for three innings of the second game and tallied one strikeout and three walks of her own to get pinned with the loss.
The Knights return to the field Wednesday as they travel to face ODAC member Bridgewater College in a double header originally scheduled on March 18. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Jopson Field Athletic Complex.
