Errors Proves Costly For Knights In Losses To Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Southern Virginia University softball team committed 9-errors in two games against the Averett University Cougars, as the Knights came up short in the first game 3-1, and than suffered a huge loss, 12-2 in the second game of a double-header. McKenzy MacKay gave up only 4-hits in 7-innings, as she took a 1-0 lead in to the sixth inning of the first game. MacKay would finish giving up only the four hits, and one earned run while striking out 5-batters.

Lainie Thompson would give the Knights an early lead as she walked in the third inning, and then was driven in by an Abbie Baxter single to left center. The Knights would not add more to the lead, as the hosts picked off SVU runners to end the inning.

The visitors had the lead heading in to the bottom of the sixth, when the error bug allowed the Cougars to score the three winning runs. SVU would not go down without a fight, as they had both Sierra Call and Laura Tome on first and second in the top of the seventh, but Baxter would ground out to end the game. Call had already got on base with two hits, and would finish 2-for-5 for the day.

The second game started well, with Amanda Otto retiring the first three batters. MacKay would get a hit in the first inning, and things were looking good for the team, but errors started to pull the game away from the Knights. Mistakes by the visitors would see them surrender 8-runs in the second inning, and 4-runs in the third to effectively end the contest.

Southern Virginia would still put up a fight, as both Baxter and Tome would score in the fifth inning. The Knights also had the bases loaded at the end before another ground out ended the game.

The losses drop the Knight to 0-4 on the young season. SVU will have little time to dwell on the season sweep by Averett, as SVU returns home to host Virginia Intermont at Laurel Park. First pitch for the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
