Knights Split With Maine- Presque Isle

BUENA VISTA, Va. After dropping the first game in the double header, 1-4, the Southern Virginia Softball team bounced back to take the second game, beating Maine- Presque Isle 5-1. The Knights were unable to get their bats going in the first game, as they totaled only six hits with two coming in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored their lone run.

UMPI had used a strong top of the sixth to put their four runs on the board to give them an insurmountable lead heading into the latter innings of the game.

Kyla Christmas went the distance in both games, and in the first game faced 32-batters giving up 9-hits on 3-earned runs, and striking out six batters.

SVU looked to change their fortunes quickly, as Christmas was brought home after a bases loaded walk to Laura Tome in the bottom of the first inning. The Knights would score a single run in each of the first five innings to give them the margin of victory.

Christmas helped herself to the win as she hit a fourth inning homerun to give the Knights a 4-1 lead. The hosts were able to total 9-hits, and forced the UMPI pitcher to walk them eight other times. The offense took the advantage as they recovered from the slow start in game one to get the split of the series.

Christmas, again, went seven innings. She struck out five batters, but gave up five hits and one earned run. The results of the day push Christmas to 10-2 on the season.

SVU is now 10-4 on the season. The team returns to action March 25 when they host UMPI again in a double header. The first game is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
