Softball Splits With Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. The Southern Virginia Softball team was able to get in to the win column with a 4-2 win against Sweet Briar, but fell in the second game 2-3. The Knights were led by Laura Tome in the first game as she went 2-for-3, and scored a run. Lyndsay Mellor recorded an RBI for the Knights, as she went 1-for-3.

The scoring for SVU all occurred in the second inning as Kyla Christmas, Amanda Otto, Tome and Nancy Lemmon crossed home plate. The Knights were aggressive on the base path, and forced the issue, as the Vixens struggled with fielding, and Christmas and Otto advanced on errors and passed balls to get home. SVU would threaten only once more in the game as they had a runner on third in the top of the sixth, but could not bring her home.

Sweet Briar answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the damage had been done, as SVU was able to finish the game with the victory.

The 4-runs would be all that Christmas would need as she pitched the full seven innings. She was dominant in her outing as she struck out twelve Vixen batters while only walking one. She gave up 4-hits and the two earned runs. The Knights totaled six hits while striking out six times.

The second game started well for SVU as Mellor led off with a double then stole home. Chloe Stephens singled, and was batted in by Christmas after a stolen base. The two early runs would be the end of the scoring for the Knights. SVU left six runners on base, and three of those runners were on third.

Sweet Briar scored runs in the 1st, 2nd and 5th innings to get the win. SVU could only muster 5-hits to the Vixens' 7. Otto took the loss as she went 4-innings, giving up 4-hits and 1-earned run. She recorded 2-strikeouts, and walked one batter.

SVU moves to 1-3 on the season. The Knights will stay on the road in their next encounter as they travel to play at Gallaudet March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
