Knights Fall to VMI in Opener

LEXINGTON, Va.—A tough night of shooting for the Southern Virginia men's basketball team led to a 78-47 loss at the Virginia Military Institute Tuesday night, in the Knights' season opener. 

Southern Virginia (0-1) made just one three-pointer, by leading scorer Rashay Douglas. The Keydets (1-1) were able to connect on 10-33 from behind the arc.

Douglas (Juffair Kingdom of Bahrain) led the Knights with 16 points on 6-10 shooting. Cale Thornton (Lyman, Maine) led with nine rebounds and chipped in five points. Aarun Rumbaugh (Auburn, Wash.) and Damen Thacker (Meridian, Idaho) finished with eight and seven points, respectively.

VMI had two players in double digits, and each hit four threes. The Keydets shot 40% (30.3% from three) compared to the Knights' 34.7% (11.1% from three). Southern Virginia also lost the turnover battle, 19-8.

The lead changed three times in the first ten minutes of the game, before VMI pulled away on back-to-back three-pointers and increased intensity.

Southern Virginia is back in action this weekend in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic held at Rutgers-Newark. The Knights will play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
