Knights Rally In Fourth To Score Win Over Kentucky Christian

GRAYSON, Ky. - Trailing in the fourth quarter, the Southern Virginia University rallied behind Zach Garner's 263-yards through the air, and scored three touchdowns, for a 45-28 win over hosts Kentucky Christian. The Knights came in to the fourth quarter, trailing 28-24 before Garner led three different touchdown drives that ended in passes.

Two of Garner's passes went to Brick Wilce, who pulled in 8-passes for 166-yards, and the two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Mitch Stevenson caught the other touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The drives for the Knights took an average of two minutes and twenty-five seconds, as the quick strikes from Garner moved the Knights against the hosts. Steven Scott ran for 84-yards on 31-carries, and scored a touchdown to add to the total for the Knights.

Steven Andreasen recorded the first score in the first quarter after a 9-play, 60-yard drive. Tyler Bowen added a field goal on the next drive for the Knights, and the 10-0 lead looked to be just what the Knights needed after a rough offensive output the week previous.

Things got better for SVU, as Garner led another drive that culminated in a pass to Scott for a 17-0 lead. The hosts did not intend to go out quietly, as they scored 21-straight points to go up on the visitors.

SVU responded in the third to go up 24-21, but KCU was not done, and recorded another score to get to 28-24. Trailing with ten minutes left, Garner worked his heroics to get the Knights a win they deserved after a heartbreaking loss the week prior against rivals Apprentice.

SVU outgained the Knights of KCU 456 to 428 in the game. SVU was effective through the air, but the ground game was also able to find an effective running game, with Scott shouldering the burden on the ground, and helping the Knights accumulate 193-yards on the run.

The visitors were led defensively by Tommy Davidson, who recorded 13-tackles on the afternoon, and forced a fumble against KCU. Matt Mellor added 7-more tackles to the game, as well as his career total.

The win was the third for SVU in the series with the Knights. The win also pushed SVU to a record of 4-6, and gives the team the second most wins in a season in program history. SVU will look for five wins in its next competition when the Knights finish the 2010 season at home against Webber International. The game will be played at Parry McCLuer High School, and has a 3:00 start time.
