BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team swept its doubleheader season-opener against Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday, winning the first game 10-4 and the second 17-3.
In game one, the Knights (2-0) struck first as Ryan Morin started his season with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
Penn State Mont Alto (0-2) responded, trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, with three runs taking a 3-1 lead.
The Lions extended their lead two innings later on a solo home run giving them a three-run advantage.
In the fifth inning, Southern Virginia's Cole Critchfield singled in Jordan Nase, energizing the Knights offense. The Knights scored five more runs in the inning coming on RBI's from Bridger Taylor, Cannon Anderson, Mitch Tyse, Hunter Blunt and Brady Lamb.
The Knights added two more runs in the sixth with the first coming by way of an error bringing Taylor home and the second on a sacrifice fly from Lamb scoring Tyse.
In the second game, the Knights offense continued on a three-run shot by Taylor with his first homer of the season.
The Knights continued with the bats scoring nine more runs to take a 12-0 lead. Later in the fourth inning, Taylor added to his day with another home run, this time a grand-slam for eight RBI's in the game and a 17-0 Knights lead.
The Lions scored three runs in the final inning of play ending the game 17-3.
Michael Sterling led the way for the Knights from the mound going four complete innings, not allowing any runs, giving up only two hits and collecting three strikeouts.
Southern Virginia heads crosstown to Lexington, Virginia, to face Washington and Lee on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
