BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University rugby team earned its first win of the season, defeating Mt. St. Mary's 30-21.
At the 38:00 minute mark, Alexander Payne got the scoring going for the Knights, scoring a tri to put Southern Virginia up 5-0, but the conversion after was no good.
Three minutes later, the Mount scored a penalty kick to bring them within two points 5-3, but Gideon Wassum answered with another tri for the squad making the new score 10-3.
The Mount again converted on another penalty kick, making the new score 10-6, but Southern Virginia used two consecutive tris to extend their lead to 14 20-6.
With just over a minute left in the half, Mt. St. Mary's capitalized on a blocked kick near the goal line that resulted in their first tri of the game.
Beginning the second half, the Mount scored their second tri of the game, but Jaxon Reyos took matters into his own hands, scoring a tri after breaking free in open space.
After another converted penalty kick by Mt. St. Mary's, Jake Barker put the nail in the coffin, scoring the game's final tri and securing the season's first victory.
Southern Virginia will play in the season finale, taking on Queens on the road on Saturday, April 24. Game time is scheduled for 1 PM.
