Even though we are having a healthy and safe start to our semester at Southern Virginia University, COVID-19 continues to impact many aspects of college life. In conjunction with the announcement by the Capital Athletic Conference, Southern Virginia University will suspend winter sport competitions through the end of the 2020 calendar year.
In addition to the previously announced fall and dual-season teams, the following sports will not compete during the fall 2020 semester: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's swimming, and wrestling.
The Southern Virginia University Athletic Department will continue to work with the University COVID Resource Center, CAC, conference affiliates, and the NCAA to consider future competitive opportunities.
"We are extremely grateful for the cooperation and support from our student-athletes as we have tried to balance safety and athletic experience," said Director of Athletics Deidra Dryden. "We are so appreciative of their positive attitudes and sacrifice to help keep our campus community healthy and safe. We will continue to prepare for future competitions and remember this is for now, not forever."
