SALEM, Va. The Southern Virginia Women's Cross Country team traveled to Roanoke to compete in the Maroon Invitational. Leila Schultz was the team's highest finisher in 30th ad the Knights finished 6th of 7 with 159 points. Despite the overall finish Head Coach Leslie McKinney found positives from the weekend.
"It was a tough day to run," said McKinney. "With the rain and the cold, it was one of those days when running can be no fun, but we did well as a team. We did not finish as high as we would have liked, but we had a pack of girls that finished together, and that bodes well for later on in the season. We ran as a team today. We'll work on the finishes, but the team running is a great sign."
The Knights were able to dominate the middle of the race as 5 Knight runners finished within 25 seconds of each other. Runners Marry Massey, Amy Steflik, Tori Isham and Randi Rose were in the pack that finished together.
"At Nationals we're going to need the best team running possible," said McKinney. "We ran against some good D.III opposition today, and it will help prepare us for later on when we travel to the USCAA Run."
The Women's team will run again Oct. 8 when they travel to run at Virginia State.
