Melissa Owen enters her first season as an assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team.
She comes to Southern Virginia from Laguna Beach, California, where she served as head coach for the 14-year-old squad of the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club from 2012-14 and also as the head coach at St. Mary’s School in Aliso Niguel, California.
Owen also coached for the United States Youth Volleyball League from 2011-13.
After high school, she earned a volleyball scholarship to Utah State University in Logan, Utah, in 2001 before transferring to BYU-Idaho where she both played and coached for its club volleyball team.
Owen graduated from Capistrano Valley High (Mission Viejo, Calif.) in 2001 after transferring from nearby Aliso Niguel High. At Capistrano, she earned CIF honorable mention honors and was second on her team in blocks and kills.
At Aliso Niguel, she achieved all-league honors for two consecutive seasons.
