LEXINGTON, Ky. — The United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-2020 season with the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team earning the program's first honor.
In addition to earning the program's first USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award, the Knights also totaled a staggering 15 players named to the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
"This is an exciting first for our program," said head coach Debby Baker. "I am so happy for my athletes, and I appreciate their hard work in the classroom. It has been an enjoyable journey to see our team work together by encouraging each other and holding each other accountable both on and on the court. This award has been one of our team's top goals, and I think that their hard work in their academics has a direct correlation of how hard they work in the gym."
Division III recorded a total of 231 teams, the most in the awards 28-year history. The AVCA issued The award honors volleyball teams that maintained a cumulative 3.30 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
On the court, the Knights finished 16-13 while going 4-6 in CAC play. Southern Virginia in the postseason hosted the CAC Quarterfinal matchup for the third consecutive year, defeating York College (Pa.) 3-1. The Knights season concluded in the CAC Semifinal matchup against Christopher Newport University in three straight sets.
