Knights Top Marlins in Five-Set Thriller

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Southern Virginia (10-4) defeated Virginia Wesleyan (13-4) in a thrilling five-set match by the score of 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 11-25, 17-15.

Freshman Kylee Christensen came up big for the Knights as she had a game-high 23 kills and a .259 hitting average on the night. Christensen now leads the team in kills with her performance against the Marlins.

"We are fighters," said head coach Debby Baker. "I love that we can come back when the game is on the line. These players do not quit, and it is every coach's dream to coach athletes that can fight this hard."

The first set of the match did not go as planned for the Knights. After falling behind 5-0, Virginia Wesleyan used that to take the set win 25-21.

Set two showcased Southern Virginia's resilience as they corrected their mistakes and dominated in the set. Senior Mykinli Knight used three service aces to extend the lead to six points midway through the game. Two final kills from Kylee Christensen locked in the set win as the Knights tie the match at one apiece.

Set three featured Southern Virginia's depth as freshman Courtney Singleton led the set with five kills. Junior Lindsay Wiedrich joined the mix as she used two crucial service aces to help the Knights win another set and put them up 2-1 in the match.

The Marlins would not go away as they came out very hot and demonstrated a dominant performance in the fourth set and forced the match to go into the fifth set.

Southern Virginia's fighting mentality shined through as the Knights found themselves down 14-11 in the fifth. Four consecutive kills from Kylee Christensen slingshot Southern Virginia into the lead. A kill from Virginia Wesleyan would delay the victory for the Knights, but two attacking errors from the Marlins put Southern Virginia on top and claimed the victory.

Junior Taryn Warner and Elle Warnick both had great nights at the net as they both hit over .250. Warnick also had a game-high 51 assists, and Courtney Singleton led the team in digs with 29. Junior Lindsay Wiedrich had a night blocking as she had a game-high five blocks. Senior Mykinli Knight ended the match with a game-high four service aces.

Southern Virginia will begin CAC conference play as they take on Salisbury in Knight Arena on Saturday, September 28th at 2 pm.
