BUENA VISTA, Va. — Undefeated Bridgwater College (13-0) snapped the Southern Virginia (7-4) four-game win-streak Friday night as they beat the Knights 25-19, 25-16, 17-25, 25-12.
Freshman Courtney Singleton shined as she had her best game of the season having 18 kills, a .244 hitting average, and 21 points.
Bridgwater was able to start the game on a strong note scoring the first four points of the match. The Eagles had built a 7-2 lead before the Knights were able to close the set to a one-point difference. Bridgewater did not relinquish their lead and took the set win 25-19.
The second set took shape to that of the first as Bridgewater scored the first points of the match and would never look back. The Eagles would cruise to a set victory as they took the second 25-16.
After the five minute break, Southern Virginia was able to collect themselves and take a commanding set victory of their own. The Knights established a 12-4 lead before the Eagles closed the set to within four points. Southern Virginia then capitalized on Bridgewater's mistakes and used kills from Junior Taryn Warner and freshman Courtney Singleton to take the set win 25-17.
Set four belonged to the Eagles as they took an 18-9 lead and then followed by scoring seven out of the last eight points to take the set and match victory as they hold on to their undefeated record.
Elle Warnick had a game-high 37 assists while junior Ryan Dubinsky led the Knights with four blocks on the night. Senior Mykynli Knight had a game-high 17 digs followed closely by Elle Warnick with 12. Three Knights round out the statistics as Kylee Christensen, Courtney Singleton, and Lindsay Wiedrich each had two service aces.
Southern Virginia looks to rebound as they have a doubleheader day on Saturday, Sept. 21 as they take on Mary Baldwin and Lynchburg.
