BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team took the court on Saturday afternoon in a conference contest, defeating their opponent, St. Mary's (Md.) 3-1.
The Knights (12-7, 3-1) came out sluggish in the first set and the Seahawks (12-14, 0-4) took advantage, winning set one 27-25.
In the second set the Knights bounced back with their best set of the afternoon, hitting .263 and collecting 14 kills, with Hailey Lohnes and Allison Tiegs combining for 11 kills in the set. The Knights also limited errors, allowing themselves to pull away from the Seahawks, taking the set 25-18.
The Knights continue to roll into the third set, building an 8-2 lead. St. Mary's (Md.) did not respond early on to the Knights run until the Knights had pushed their lead to 10, leading 18-8. The Seahawks miraculously fought their way back to tie the game up at 20 all. After a Southern Virginia timeout, the Knights went to win the set 25-21.
In a match that had already been dominated by the Knights, they never looked back in the fourth set, with a wire-to-wire victory, 25-18.
Allison Tiegs put together a solid performance with 14 kills, five digs and hitting .286. The Knights' statiscal leaders for tonight were: Lohnes with 16 kills, LaRee Crockett with 35 assists, Mykynli Knight gathering 18 digs and Lindsay Hyer with three blocks.
The Knights will play next in their last home game at Knight Arena before tournament play against Frostburg State on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
