Women's Volleyball Rolls Past Randolph and Averett at Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team opened their season today with two games at the 24th Annual Cougar Classic. They finished the day perfect with a 2-0 record after defeating Randolph College 3-0 and following up with a 3-1 victory over Averett University.

In game one against the Wildcats, the Knights took control in the first set with a 25-20 victory. Southern Virginia quickly stole the second set with a dominant 25-16 win. The Knights' momentum carried to the third set where they finished off the match with a 25-18 sweep.

Allison Tiegs led the way with 10 kills, followed closely by teammate Hailey Lohnes with eight. LaRee Crockett found her teammates with 30 assists, while junior Mykynkli Knight led the team with 19 digs.

In game two the Knights defeated Averett University in four closely contested sets, where Southern Virginia won sets one (27-25), three (25-20) and four (25-20).

Southern Virginia surpassed 50 kills against the cougars, led by Allison Tiegs (14) and Kaely Rath (13). LaRee Crockett set a new career-high with 45 assists. Crockett, who also had 10 digs, was one of three Knights who tallied 10 or more digs, along with Sarah Smedley (15), and Mykynli Knight (23).

The Knights head into day two of the Cougar Classic tournament on Saturday Sept. 1, against William Peace at 11:00 and Guilford at 1:00.
