ARLINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team earned the third seed in the Capital Athletic Conference postseason tournament after a 3-2 win over Marymount University.
The Knights enter the postseason for just the second time in program history as members of the CAC, and the first time under head coach Nicole Gwynn.
The Saints (13-13, 4-5) jumped to a quick start with a 25-21 win in game one. After the Knights (20-7, 7-2 CAC) decisively won sets two and three 25-17 and 25-10, Marymount bounced back with a 25-23 win in set four to force the Knights into a fifth set for just the second time this season.
In the final set, the Saints held an 11-9 advantage before the Knights scored five in a row behind the service of Hailey Lohnes to earn match point. Although Marymount scored one more point, the Knights sealed the match on a Hannah Allred kill.
Allred finished the game with a game-high 19 kills and recorded her eleventh double-double of the season with 11 digs. Penny Gwynn added a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 13 digs.
As the three seed, Southern Virginia will host the sixth-seed Marymount at the Knight Sports Arena on Tuesday, October 31 at 7 p.m. The winner of Tuesday's game will face Mary Washington on Thursday in Fredericksburg, Va.
