Women's Volleyball Splits on Opening Day

DANVILLE, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team opened their season today with two games at the 23rd Annual Cougar Classic. They finished the day with a 1-1 record after winning the first match against Randolph College 3-0 and dropping the second match to host Averett University, 0-3.

In the first match, Southern Virginia dominated the Randolph Wildcats, winning 25-21, 25-17, and 25-17 in straight sets. The Knights were able to avoid errors in both attacking and receiving serves and had 14 blocks to Randolph's six.

Senior Hannah Allred, who was named to the All-CAC Second Team in 2016, led the Knights in kills and digs, with 17 and 13, respectively. Setter LaRee Crockett had a career-best match with 36 assists. Allison Tiegs and Penny Gwynn added nine kills each, while libero Mykynli Knight tacked on 11 digs.

The Knights were outplayed in the second match by Averett, losing 0-3. The Cougars finished the match with 40 kills, while Southern Virginia was able to manage only 23.

Sophomore Mykynli Knight had a match-high 14 digs, while Hannah Allred and Penny Gwynn had nine kills apiece.

The Knights will play two matches on Saturday at Averett, before hosting Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in Buena Vista, Virginia.
