Knights Fall to Cougars and Generals

BUENA VISTA, Va.—In a season-opening tri-match at home the Southern Virginia volleyball team was unable to capture a win against Averett and Washington & Lee Universities.

Southern Virginia vs. Averett

In match one Averett University (2-0) took a quick 2-0 lead over Southern Virginia (0-2) winning games one and two 25-15 and 25-19.

The Knights tightly contested with the Cougars in the third set and clinched a two-point win, 31-29. In a close fourth set the Knights fell 25-21.

Hannah Phillips led all Knights with 11 digs while Allison Tiegs and Claire Houghtaling had 14 and 10 kills, respectively.

Averett's Hannah Shields led all players with 28 kills.


Southern Virginia vs. Washington & Lee

After a tough opening match the Knights fell 3-0 to the Generals.

Freshman outside hitter, Allison Tiegs, led the attack for the Knights with 12 kills.  Hanna Phillips contributed 8 kills. Freshman libero, Ofa Moa-Sam Fong, led the team with 20 digs.

The Knights and the Generals (1-1) traded point for point in the first set before the Generals were able to clench a 26-24 victory. The Knights were unable to hold the lead in the last two sets falling 25-19 and 25-15.

Washington & Lee's Meg Guignon had 15 kills.

Southern Virginia returns to the court on September 4 at 7 p.m. on the road at Transylvania University.
