BUENA VISTA, Va.—Heading into her first season as head coach of the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team, Brittney Lee announced the 2014 schedule Thursday afternoon in Buena Vista, Va.
The slate includes three neutral tournaments in the opening weeks with a mixture of Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponents throughout September. Play in the Capital Athletic Conference begins shortly after in early October.
"The non-conference games to open the season are going to be very competitive and challenging for us," Lee said. "The tournaments we'll play in to open the season will have really strong volleyball programs but should prepare us well for the remaining non-league games and the rest of the year.
"We have a ton of really good teams in our conference but our goal is to make the CAC postseason tournament. Every game we'll need to be prepared because there isn't a single easy opponent on our schedule."
The home season begins with a Sept. 9 matchup with Mary Baldwin before a game at Eastern Mennonite the following day. After another neutral tournament hosted by Roanoke College Sept. 12-13, the Knights face three more ODAC opponents in late September before CAC play ensues.
Southern Virginia travels to St. Mary's on Oct. 1 to open league action before traveling to Christopher Newport a week later. The Captains won the CAC with a perfect 8-0 record last season en route to both regular season and tournament championships. CNU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to cap the impressive season.
Second-place CAC finisher Salisbury earned a 7-1 league mark last season and 29-6 overall record. The Sea Gulls earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament, falling to Stevenson, 3-0, in the first round.
Marymount placed fourth in the CAC last season with a 5-3 conference record, but advanced to the championship game of the ECAC postseason tournament where they lost by a 3-0 score to Bethany (WV).
Mary Washington came in third in the league race last season with a 6-2 CAC record and 17-12 overall mark. The Knights host the Eagles on Oct. 15.
Southern Virginia closes the season Nov. 1 at Penn State Harrisburg.
