Volleyball Wins Home Opener Against Hollins in Straight Sets

By Daniel Whitehead

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Coming off a win last weekend, the Southern Virginia University volleyball team kept the momentum going with a victory in its home opener Tuesday night as the Knights defeated Hollins University in straight sets at the Knight Sports Arena.

Southern Virginia (3-4) beat Hollins (1-10) by a 25-18, 25-19, 25-13 series to open the 2013 home slate on the right foot.

"I'm happy with the win and I thought the girls played hard in front of the crowd," said Southern Virginia head coach Paige Hiatt. "While we saw a lot of good things, we need to eliminate the slow starts. Once we get into it, we play great. Our confidence level has come up a lot and the girls are starting to play to attack instead of not to lose."

The Knights registered 19 kills in the opening set with only four errors out of 36 attempts. Of the team's 42 kills for the night, senior Tori Tuttle and freshman McKenzie Weaver accounted for 13 and 11, respectively, for over half of the Knights' tally. Defensively, Tuttle also earned a team point off a block assist, while Weaver totaled five digs.

Sophomore Katelynn Tlustek had 34 assists in the game and earned five service aces. Freshman April Bennett achieved 12 digs for the Knights while contributing four service aces and three assists. Senior Shyanne Ison registered nine kills for the night on 21 attempts and also had an assist and three aces to go along with five digs on defense. Junior Kaitlyn Eaton had seven kills in the game.

Hollins was led by Lauren Hays, who achieved 12 kills on the night on just 16 attempts for a .688 hitting percentage. She also earned an ace, one solo block and an assisted block.

Southern Virginia tallied 42 kills to Hollins' 20 and had 89 attempts compared to 65 for Hollins.

The Knights return to action Friday night for a road trip to Guilford. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
