Volleyball Stumbles Against Concord And King

ATHENS, W.V. The Southern Virginia volleyball team was looking to get back to winning ways when it faced off with Concord and King in a tri-match day, but the Knights could not find the winning formula, dropping both matches, 0-3 and 1-3. SVU faced off first with King, and found the game a challenging one, as King was firing on all cylinders. The Tornadoes have lost only for matches this season, and SVU would not be able to give them a fifth. King quickly established a strong lead in the first set, as they marched to a convincing 25-16 win.

SVU was led by the trio of Brynn McGinn, Shyanne Ison and Bryndy Anderson who each recorded 6-kills in the match. Despite the disappointing early set loss, SVU regrouped, and put up a stronger fight in the second match, as they got within 3-points of King, but could not score the set win, falling 25-22. Ali Krebs was directing the offense for the Knights, and produced 23-assists in the match. A 2-0 whole was too much to ask of the Knights, as they could not recover, and lost the next set 25-15, to go to the 3-0 loss to the Tornados.

A quick turn around was required of Southern Virginia, as they needed to face off against the hosts in the final game of the tri-match day. SVU's offense was still sputtering in the first set against the Lady Lions, and they fell to the hosts 25-14. Fight had not died in the Knights, and they bounced back in a big way, with a 25-22 second set win to give the Knights hope of a victory over Concord. McGinn was playing an unstoppable game, as she registered 12-kills total in the match. Krebs contributed 40-assists, and the visitors had an improved offensive output.

Paige Allred had an immediate impact for the Knights, as she played the last two sets, and recorded 6-kills without an error, and provided solid defense from the front line. The improved effort proved to be not enough, as Concord was able to keep the Knights at bay in the third an fourth set, and secured another win over the Knights this season.

The loss drops SVU to 8-15 on the season. The Knights return to action Oct. 16 when they travel to take part in the Randolph Invitational in Lynchburg, VA. The Knights are scheduled to take on Randolph College, Regis (MA) College, and Methodist College.
