Knights Finish Strong in Victory

BUENA VISTA, Va. An emphatic fourth set victory sealed a win for the Southern Virginia Volleyball team, as they overcame Virginia Intermont 3-1. In front of a raucous home crowd, the Knights were pushed by the Cobras, but grabbed on to the fourth set with a 25-9 win to finish off the Cobras.

It started very well or the hosts as they established a 21-6 lead late in the first set. VIC came back and made it close, but the Knights finished off the game 25-22 for the match lead. Momentum for the Knights was swiftly taken away in the second set, as the visitors fought hard, and SVU made several critical errors on the way to the 13-25 loss.

"We were inconsistent in that second set," said Head Coach Brian Pendleton. "Heading into the USCAA National Tournament we need to remember how to keep a team on the ropes and finish the game. We forgot that a little tonight."

Despite the second set hiccup, the Knights went out fired up for the third set, and were able to establish a dominance that would push them t the final victory. The third set victory was not without its drama. SVU raced to a commanding 18-12 lead and looked to have the set wrapped up. Again the Cobras did not give in, and forced the issue as they got to within two points of the hosts before the set was put away at 25-20.

The third set gave SVU the motivation to finish off the Cobras, and the fourth set left little doubt as to the better team on the night.

"The inconsistency of the second set was a little troubling," said Pendleton. "However, we regrouped and pushed it in those last two sets. That fourth set was wonderful to watch. Everything was clicking the right way. It's good to get the win and play well."

Brynn Hansen led the team again with 10 kills. Ali Krebs pitched in 3 assists, and Hillary Congdon contributed 13 digs. Ashley Miles and Samantha Sumsion also contributed as they chipped in kills and blocks on both sides of the ball. The knights now sit at 17-12 on the season. The final home competition and regular season match will be played Oct. 30 at 7:00 pm. The game will also be Senior Night for the team.
