Starting on the road at the Milligan Mountain Madness
Tournament, the Southern Virginia Volleyball team participated in
four matches against some of the best NAIA volleyball teams in the
region. Despite losing a starter to injury, and missing two other
starters, the Knights played solid in all their matches, but were
unable to record a win, as they went 0-4 for the tournament.
The Knights first match of the tournament was against Bryan
College. SVU went down 1-3 (23-25, 25-21, 18-25 and 23-25) to the
Lady Lions. The following match of the evening pitted The Knights
against the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands. Again,
Southern Virginia fell in four games 21-25, 24-26, 21-25 and
21-15.
The next day of the tournament continued to be a challenge for the
Knights as they started with a 1-3 (19-25, 25-22, 17-25 and 16-25)
loss to the hosts, Milligan College. The Knights also lost starter
Cari Shumway to a knee injury. SVU looked to regroup and end on a
high note for the tournament, but Shorter College overwhelmed them
winning 3-0 (18-25, 22-25 and 8-25). Freshman Ashley Miles was
named to the All-Tournament Team.
Despite the losses, Coach Brian Pendleton saw growth from the team,
and is excited for the newcomers to start to gel with returners.
The Knights will be back in action Sept. 1 in their home opener
against Roanoke College. Game time is set for 6:30 PM.
