Knights Triumph Over Roanoke

Southern Virginia University Volleyball started its home opener fast, and never looked back, as it overcame Roanoke College 3-0 (25-14, 25-21 and 26-24). The Knights recovered from a challenging weekend tournament and now sit at 1-4 for the season.

SVU was led by a powerful one-two combination of Rika Larsen and Aubrey Muaina. The duo were not able to play at the Milligan tournament this past weekend, and their presence was definitely felt, as they combined for 20 kills on the night. Setting them up was Ali Krebs, who racked up 21 assists. Brynn Hansen and Ashley miles also were big contributors, and the Knights finally had something to smile about in the 2009 season.

"The Milligan tournament was very difficult," said Head Coach Brian Pendleton. "All the teams were good NAIA competition, and we struggled at times, especially considering how young and inexperienced we are. Tonight we had, what looks like, all of our starters, and things started to click. Roanoke swept us last year, so this is a good indicator of what our program can do."

The Knights are looking to improve from last year's third place finish at the USCAA National Tournament, and although the 1-4 start may not be very encouraging, Pendleton feels that his team gained great experience last week, and will take the Roanoke win as motivation heading forward.

"I'm not sure if we've seen our full potential yet. Tonight helps, and hopefully it will push us to improve, and take the final step at the national tournament."

SVU will be in action again starting Sept. 4 as they travel down to Roanoke to take part in Roanoke College's Tournament. Participants for the tournament include Emory & Henry, Roanoke, Randolph, and Sweet Briar.
