Track and Field Begins Outdoor Season at Washington and Lee Carnival

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their outdoor season this weekend at Washington and Lee University.

On the women's team, sophomore Mesi Havea won the only individual title for the day winning the discus with a mark of 40.85m. Havea added a second place finish and a new school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.70m to lead the Knights.

Kanani Lasike scored for the Knights also in the discus with a throw measuring 36.13m.

Distance runner Jill Westman finished 10th in the 5000m with a time of 20:23.34 while mid-distance runner Elora Smith ran the 1500m with a time of 5:28.44 to win her heat.

On the men's team, Derek Blasko led the Knights with a school record in his first outdoor meet of the season with a mark of 40.30m in the discus finishing fifth overall. Hector Magallanes was the top Knight in the hammer throw finishing 15th with a toss of 31.38m.

For the jumps, freshman Skylar Johnson finished 18th with a jump of 5.64m in the long jump.

Southern Virginia enters the final day of the 2019 Washington and Lee Carnival tomorrow Saturday, Mar. 16 starting at 11:00 a.m. for the field events and 12:00 p.m. for the track events.
