Women’s Tennis Sweeps Spartans in CAC First Round

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's tennis team defeated York College of Pennsylvania 5-0 on Saturday afternoon, sending the Knights to the second round of the CAC tournament for the first time in program history.

The Knights (15-4) opened up the match with a doubles sweep as Morgan Blount and Alyssa Sewell took down their opponents 8-4 at the No. 3 flight. Lauren Morrison and Rachel Christensen quickly followed at No. 2 with an 8-2 victory before Rachel Neeleman and Elizabeth Fuchs clutched out a tough 8-7(5) win at No. 1 completing Southern Virginia's doubles sweep.

In singles, Morgan Blount finished first, dominating her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Alyssa Sewell then clinched the match at the No. 6 spot downing her opponent from York (8-6) 6-3, 6-2.

The rest of the singles matches were unfinished due to CAC tournament protocol which calls for the matches to be ended immediately when one team earns the necessary five points needed to clinch the match.

Southern Virginia will compete in the second round of the tournament on the 30th of April as they will travel to the University of Mary Washington with match time scheduled for 4 p.m.
