Reid Named Knight Awards' Female Rookie of the Year

BUENA VISTA, Va. Based on on-line voting, and SVU athletic staff voting, Southern Virginia Women’s Tennis player, Rachael Reid, has been named the 2009-2010 Knight Awards Female Rookie of the Year. The Knight Awards celebrate the accomplishments of Southern Virginia athletes for a year. The voting comes from the votes of fans on-line, and then is a combined with the votes of the athletic department staff to determine the winner.

Reid had a monumental first campaign for the knights as she led them to the first overall winning season on program history. Reid’s exploits are noteworthy, as she was the #1 seed in every match the Knights played. Reid faced off against the best players in every match, and finished the season with a 12-5 record. Her contributions went beyond the singles matches, as she went 11-6 in doubles play.

The women’s tennis team finished a solid 8-4 on the season after Reid’s performances, and garnered the first winning season in the short history of the team. The team’s success started early in the fall as they traveled to Ferrum for a tournament, and won the tourney with Reid voted the outstanding player of the tournament, and winning the singles bracket of the matches. Reid, along with her twin sister Rebekah, will lead an assault on the area teams next term. With a strong returning core, the women’s tennis team will look to have a solid future, with the first winning, in all likelihood, not being the last.

The Southern Virginia Athletic Department wishes to congratulate Rachael Reid as the 2009-2010 Rookie Female Athlete of the Year.
