Knights Suffer Loss at Home to No. 8 Captains

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team fell in its head-to-head matchup against Capital Atheltic Conference foe No. 8 Christopher Newport 5-0.

The Knights' (3-13-1, 1-7-0 CAC) (14-1-2, 7-0-2 CAC) defense managed to hold the Captains (14-1-2, 7-0-2 CAC) high-octane offense scoreless until the 29th minute when Riley Cook scored a goal from Carson Pokorny to take a 1-0 lead over the Knights at the half.

In the second half, Southern Virginia saw limited opportunities on offense to tie the game. The Captains increased their lead in the 65th minute to increase their lead 2-0.

After a solid game on defense, the Knights surrendered three goals in the final 11 minutes of play to give the Captains a 5-0 lead and win.

The Knights managed to land two shots on goal both from the foot of freshman Laurel Storheim and produced one corner kick that occurred the second half.

At goal for Southern Virginia was freshman Alyssa Trueman where she collected seven saves.

Junior Riley Cook anchored the Christopher Newport offense with a strong performance of four goals and an assist.

The Knights will now hit the road for their last road game of the season at Salisbury on Saturday, Oct. 23, slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
