Women's Soccer Fall 3-1 on Senior Night

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team hosted the York College (Pa.) Spartans for senior day, falling 3-1 Saturday night at Knight Stadium.

The Knights (3-12-1, 1-6 CAC) and Spartans (6-10, 3-4 CAC) battled through the first half with each team trading offensive attacks before Georgia Gillcrist netted a goal from Natalie McCarthy for a 1-0 lead.

Southern Virginia responded in the 27th minute on a Savannah Sundberg goal for her second of the season while Gracie Duncan picked up her second assist of the season, tying the game 1-1.

With just over ten minutes remaining in the opening half, Erin Baier put the Spartans back on top 2-1 after receiving a pass from Jo Nicholson.

The Knights saw opportunities in the second half but were unsuccessful in capitalizing. York (Pa.) put the game out of reach in the 54th minute when Caitlyn Findlay scored to seal the game with a 3-1 victory.

The Spartans outshot the Knights 16-6 while Southern Virginia held the upper hand in corner kicks 8-6.

Five different Knights recorded a shot attempt with Tori Wescott leading the team at two.

Savannah Uri and Alyssa Trueman combined efforts at goal for Southern Virginia collecting eight saves on 11 shots on goal.

The Knights will now head to No. 3 Christopher Newport on Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a start time scheduled for 6 p.m.
