BUENA VISTA, Va. — Two overtime periods were not enough to separate the Southern Virginia and Brevard women's soccer team on Saturday night as the teams tied 1-1 in a suspenseful game.
The Tornados (0-2-2) struck first in the 7th minute with a quick counterattack leading to a goal. The Knights (1-4-1) answered in the 31st minute as a Madison Hollenbeck free kick snuck through the defense and found the foot of sophomore Tori Wescott who put it in the back of the net.
Southern Virginia dominated possession in the second period, firing off 11 shots to just three for the Tornados. The Knights struggled with accuracy, however, as only seven of their 23 total shots in the game were on goal.
As the final 10 seconds were being counted down, Brevard found an opening and took a shot at goal, but freshman goalie Alyssa Trueman dove to her left for a clutch save to send the game to extra time.
The Knights took five shots in overtime, but the winning goal eluded them.
Southern Virginia takes the field again on Thursday as they take on Regent University at Knight Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
