Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener at the Meredith Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team opened its season on Friday afternoon, falling 3-0 on the road to Meredith College.

The Avenging Angels (1-0) found the back of the net twice in the first half, scoring their first goal in the 10th minute and their second in the 31st.

The Knights (0-1) came out firing to start the second half, putting three shots on goal and earning a corner in the first three minutes of the frame. The aggression continued throughout the half, but the squad wasn't able to get on the board. Meredith scored its final goal in the 82nd minute.

The game contained some bright spots for Southern Virginia as the team outshot Meredith 14-6, and they managed to put 10 of those attempts on frame.

Freshman Laurel Storheim led the team in shots with four, while Savannah Sundberg, Sydney Kuhni, and Holly Cunha each had two. Alyssa Trueman was in goal for the Knights, finishing with three saves in the loss.

Southern Virginia returns to Raleigh on Saturday to take on North Carolina Wesleyan (0-1) on a neutral field as part of the Meredith Classic. Kickoff is slated for 4:15 p.m.
