Knights Open Conference Play with Loss to Seahawks

BUENA VISTA, Va. — In its Capital Athletic Conference opener, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team dropped a game to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1.

The Seahawks (7-5, 2-0 CAC) took control in the first half by scoring goals in the 7th and 24th minutes. The Knights (4-5, 0-1 CAC) had opportunities of their own with seven shots in the half, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Midway through the second period Southern Virginia drew a foul at the edge of the 18-yard box, which led to freshman Madi King's free kick connecting with sophomore Kylie Auger for the header goal.

After several more opportunities on both ends of the field, the Seahawks' Alex Moody scored her second goal of the game to give the visitors a 3-1 in the 80th minute. St. Mary's (Md.) would hold on for the final ten minutes for the win.

The match was back-and-forth with the Knights finishing with 13 shots to the Seahawks' 15. Senior Jamilla Anderson led the team in shots with four, while Auger and Emma Stohl both had two.

Southern Virginia will take the field again on Wednesday as they take on Ferrum College in a nonconference matchup. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
