BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team took on ninth-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, falling 4-1 to the Captains in a hard-fought match.
Christopher Newport (10-0-1, 3-0 CAC) opened up the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute and extended the lead to 2-0 with another in the 20th. The Knights' defense and keeper Merideth Ouellette played hard for the rest of the half, limiting the Captains' clean looks at goal and coming up with timely saves.
In the 69th minute, Southern Virginia surrendered another goal after a corner kick was volleyed in. The Knights cut the lead ten minutes later to 3-1 after a Taylor Mercer corner kick found the foot of Kora Jewell for a goal, her third of the year. The Captains responded with another goal in the 82nd minute to wrap up the scoring for the game.
The Captains dominated possession for the game, outshooting the Knights 29-2, and taking nine more corner kicks. Other than the goal by Jewell, forward Alli Rigby took the only other shot for the Knights. Ouellette took the loss for the match, but recorded nine saves.
Southern Virginia returns to action on Saturday, October 7, when Wesley College comes to town. Kickoff will be at 5:30 p.m. at Knights Stadium and will be broadcasted live.
