BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team won their third game of the season Tuesday night, in a 2-1 non-conference victory over Emory & Henry College.
The Wasps (2-6) opened the scoring with a goal in the 24th minute, off of a pass which glided from right to left across the box and was tapped into the corner of the net.
Southern Virginia's (3-5-1) Alli Rigby (Rexburg, Idaho) scored the equalizer from 25 yards out in the 37th minute as she danced around a defender and buried a shot above the keeper's outstretched arms. Rigby's goal seemed to awaken the Knights' offense, which seemed to possess the ball for nearly the rest of the half. With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Southern Virginia earned a corner kick. A beautifully placed Cyanne Smith (Farmville, Va.) corner found the head of senior midfielder Kora Jewell (Highland, Utah), who drilled the game-winner into the net.
Both teams held each other scoreless in the second half. Keeper Merideth Ouellette earned the win for the night, recording one save. The Knights had 21 shots on the night (eight on goal). Rigby and Jewell each had five, while Smith recorded four.
Southern Virginia is back in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday as they face Penn State Harrisburg on the road. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. in Middletown, Pa.
