BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team dropped its home opener against Bridgewater College on Wednesday by a score of 2-1.
The Eagles (1-1-1) got on the board early with a goal in the second minute and kept the lead throughout the first half. Early in the second half, the Knights (0-2) tied the game when senior Kora Jewell put a nice pass from forward Alli Rigby in the bottom corner of the goal from about 25 yards out. Bridgewater scored the go-ahead goal off of a corner kick that resulted in a header finding the back of the net late in the second period.
"We went down to an early goal, but we were able to regroup and start connecting the way that we've been working on in practice," Coach Kenzie Cox commented.
The Knights took only four shots on the game compared to the Eagles' 13. Other than Jewell's goal, the only other shot on frame for the Knights was from fellow senior Shirley Morales-Llan.
Southern Virginia goalkeeper Katie Vaughn took the loss on the night but ended with five saves.
"I'm really pleased with the progress we've made since just the last time we stepped out on the field," Cox said. "I think it shows a lot about the leadership we're developing on the team."
Southern Virginia takes the field again on Friday as they hit the road to take on Ferrum College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
