Four Named to All-Tournament Team Despite Loss at Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. – After having game one of the Meredith College Classic rained out on Friday, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team kicked off their season against host Meredith College Saturday evening, falling 2-0 to the Avenging Angels. Despite the loss, four Knights were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Meredith (2-0) broke the 0-0 stalemate in the 38th minute, with their second goal against the Knights (0-1) coming in the 70th minute.

Southern Virginia managed to shoot six times in the game compared to Meredith's 13, with 4 of the Knights' shots being on goal. Freshman Cyanne Smith (Farmville, Va.) led the attack for the Knights, shooting three times and putting two on goal. Senior Kora Jewell and Sophomore Taylor Mercer each added a shot on frame as well.

Freshman goalkeeper Katie Vaughn (Spanish Fork, Utah) was tagged with the loss, recording three saves.

Four Knights were named to the Meredith College Classic All-Tournament Team: Smith, Clarissa Barton (Evanston, Wyo.), Anne Powell (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Alli Rigby (Rexburg, Idaho).  

Southern Virginia will look to pick up their first win of the season as they take on Bridgewater College on Wednesday at home. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. at Knights Stadium.
