Grawrock Announces 2014 Women’s Soccer Schedule

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Eighth-year Southern Virginia University women's soccer head coach Matt Grawrock announced the 2014 women's soccer schedule Tuesday afternoon in Buena Vista, Va.

"It's one of the toughest schedules we've had in school history," Grawrock said. "The pre-conference matchups we'll have are going to be very challenging but will help us prepare most effectively for the Capital Athletic Conference. As always, the CAC will be extremely competitive and each game a fight, but we're confident with the team we have coming back and a great recruiting class will provide a roster to compete with the best."

The 2014 schedule features 19 games, including 2013 NCAA qualifiers Christopher Newport and York College. The Knights open the season with a two-game tournament Aug. 29-30 in Lynchburg, Va., where they will face national power Lynchburg College and another difficult ODAC opponent in Roanoke College the following day.

Christopher Newport won the 2013 CAC regular season title with a 7-1 mark and 14-4-2 overall record, going undefeated during the season in league play before falling to York in the CAC Tournament championship game. The Captains eventually lost by a 3-1 tally to Bowdoin College in the first round of the NCAA D-III Tournament.

York College placed second in the CAC standings after the regular season but defeated Christopher Newport in the CAC title game by a 1-1 score following a double-overtime shootout. After defeating Carnegie Mellon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans fell to Johns Hopkins by a close 1-0 score in the second round.

The home slate begins with a Sept. 6 game with NCAA Division II member Barton College. Southern Virginia faces another D-II opponent Oct. 1 on the road at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Southern Virginia closes the season Oct. 28 at home against Frostburg State.
