Women’s Soccer Tops Marymount for Senior Day Victory

By Daniel Whitehead

BUENA VISTA, Va.—In a match that honored five departing seniors playing in their second-to-last home game, three Southern Virginia University women's soccer underclassmen scored goals to earn a 3-1 victory over visiting Marymount University (Va.) Tuesday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.

Freshmen Tatiana Monsen and Reilly Anderson and sophomore Alicia Blackham notched goals for the Knights to help improve their season record to 6-8-1 while the Saints fall to 5-9-0. Seniors Meghan Blackham, Randi Cline, Bryndel Lytle, Lora Palmer and Meagen Varney were honored at halftime for their contributions to the program throughout their careers.

"I was pleased with the win because it showed the potential our team has for the future," said Southern Virginia Director of Soccer Matt Grawrock. "It was fun to see our young players have such a big impact on the game when we were honoring our departing girls. We took good care of the ball throughout the game and were dangerous in our attack instead of advancing timidly to the net. We had good movement and played with confidence.

"We will miss the five girls leaving after this season and I'm proud of what they've given to the program in their two to four years here. Their losses will be felt, but it's exciting to see the potential of our younger players and what we can accomplish in the future."

Southern Virginia outshot the Saints by a 10-4 margin and converted three of its four shots on goal en route to the win. The Knights' offensive efforts were further displayed by Southern Virginia's five-to-one corner kick advantage.

Late in the first half at the 36:16 mark, Monsen put the Knights on the board following an assist from a Palmer throw-in that she scored from the right side of the box. Early in the second half (51:50), Alicia Blackham took a corner kick that sailed through the hands of Marymount keeper April Westmark and took a Southern Virginia bounce into the Saint net to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.

Marymount's Chloe McAuliffe scored at the 65:00 minute mark to keep the Knights from earning a shutout, but Southern Virginia scored an insurance goal 10 minutes later (74:19) when Anderson took a cross from Palmer and snuck the ball past a diving Westmark into the lower left corner of the net after striking it from the top of the box.

Knight goalie MaKenzie Cox earned the win to improve to 4-8-1 on the year while Westmark drops to 5-9-0.

Southern Virginia next faces Capital Athletic Conference opponent York (Pa.) on the road for a Saturday matchup scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in York, Pa.
