FERRUM, Va.—Sophomore midfielder Meagen Varney (Loganville, Ga.) scored the final two goals during Monday's Southern Virginia University women's soccer match at Ferrum College giving the Knights a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Panthers.

Eager to halt a three game slide, Southern Virginia jumped out to an early lead over Ferrum when senior midfielder Melanee Guymon (Chico, Calif.) scored her team-leading third goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Bryndel Kindred (Tremonton, Utah) only 2:35 into the opening period.

Ferrum would answer back, however, with two goals over the next 36 minutes of play as the Panthers entered the break with a 2-1 lead over the Knights.

Still trailing by one goal nearly 12 minutes into the second half, Varney was awarded a penalty kick, which she converted for her first goal of season tying the match at two goals apiece.

Neither team would score again through the end of regulation and the first of two ten-minute overtime periods.

As time was running down in the second overtime, Kindred set up Varney who beat Ferrum's keeper for her second goal of the night and the match-winner for Southern Virginia in the 109th minute.

With its second overtime win this season, women's soccer climbs to 3-6 overall, while Ferrum falls to 4-4-1 on the year.

After playing three games over the past four days, Southern Virginia if off until Friday, Sept. 30 when it travel the short distance to Washington and Lee University for a make-up game with the Generals that was rained out on Sept. 6. Friday's match at W&L will begin at 4 p.m.
