BUENA VISTA, Va.—Freshman Brooke Mortensen (Provo, Utah) scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 65th minute of Thursday's match against NCAA Division III Eastern Mennonite University giving the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Royals as the Knights remained undefeated at home this season.
Southern Virginia dominated possession early outshooting Eastern Mennonite 11-1 in the opening half, but the Knights were unable find the back of the net despite multiple breakouts from senior Melanee Guymon (Chico, Calif.) and sophomore Bryndel Kindred (Tremonton, Utah) over the first 45 minutes of play.
Eastern Mennonite's goalie stopped all five of Southern Virginia's first-half shots-on-goal as the game remained scoreless into the second half before Mortensen beat the Royals keeper on a solo shot from the left side of the box.
After falling behind, Eastern Mennonite forced the issue offensively launching three shots in the final 20 minutes of play, but Southern Virginia's keeper Briar Sands was unfazed as the sophomore recorded five total saves in her first shutout of the season.
With two consecutive wins over NCAA Division III competition, women's soccer (2-3) will face its third straight D-III opponent Monday, Sept. 19 at Averett University.
