BUENA VISTA, Va. – With hat-tricks from sophomore Kendra Heim and freshman Bryndel Kindred and two additional goals from junior Maddie Wiscombe, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team defeated visiting Mountain State University 8-2 in Tuesday's "Kick for the Cure" breast cancer research fundraiser match.
Southern Virginia, now 6-0-1 in its last seven matches, jumped out to an early lead against Mountain State when Heim scored the match's first goal on an assist from junior Melanee Guymon in the 12th minute of play. Mountain State pulled even with the Knights at the 30:24 mark with an unassisted break-away goal.
The match would not remain tied for long as Kindred reclaimed Southern Virginia's lead with back to back goals in the 39th and 40th minute. Guyman assisted Kindred on both goals as she tallied her second and third assists of the match. Heim then netted her second goal just before the close of the first period, giving the Knights a 4-1 advantage heading into the half.
Southern Virginia and Mountain State traded goals to open the second half as Wiscombe's score on a Jackie Barlow setup at the 52:08 mark was answered 40 seconds later by another Mountain State breakaway goal. Mountain State's second goal would be its last as the Southern Virginia defense stiffened in the final 40 minutes. The Knights' stifling defense allowed them to outshoot the Cougars 45-11 on the afternoon.
Kindred, Wiscombe and Heim would each score one additional goal in the final 30 minutes of play to complete the Southern Virginia rout. Kindred's hat-trick came in the 63rd minute on an assist from Wiscombe. Wiscombe then scored an unassisted goal in the 68th minute for her second score of the contest and Heim rounded out the scoring for the Knights and completed her hat-trick in the 81st minute on an assisted goal from sophomore and usual keeper, Mariah Flake.
Women's soccer's "Kick for the Cure" and volleyball's "Dig for the Cure," combined Tuesday to raise over $560 in contributions for breast cancer research. Women's soccer will look to continue its unbeaten streak on Thursday, Oct. 21 when it travels to face Ferrum College at 7 p.m.
