Women's Soccer Scores Seven Goals In Rout Over Christendom

BUENA VISTA, Va. –  The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games Friday evening with a dominate 7-0 home victory over Christendom College. The Knights scored five goals in the first period and added two more in the second as they climbed to 5-5 on the season.

Southern Virginia wasted no time jumping out to an early lead over Christendom as junior Maddie Wiscombe scored the opening goal of the match on an assist from fellow junior Melanie Guyman just two minutes into the competition.

The Knights added to their lead when freshman Joni Painter netted the first goal of her collegiate career in the 20th minute of play. Ten minutes later, freshman Laura Schow also scored her first collegiate goal to give Southern Virginia a 3-0 advantage.

Briar Sands, who usually plays goalkeeper for Southern Virginia, also got into the scoring act netting her first two goals of the season before the close of the first period. Sands' first goal came off an assist from sophomore Kendra Heim, who leads the Knights with three assists on the season, and her second was assisted by Amanda Zweifel.

Southern Virginia continued its dominance in the second half, scoring two more goals and playing stifling defense.

The Knights' season leader in goals, freshman Bryndel Kindred, found the back of the net in the 69th minute, scoring on Heim's second assist of the competition. Junior Emma Alkonis was the fourth Knight to score her first goal of the season against Christendom when she netted Southern Virginia's seventh goal of the match at the 81:58 mark.

The Knights' defense was also fantastic on Friday, as Southern Virginia did not allow Christendom a single shot in the match. Southern Virginia fired 45 total shots in the competition, with 28 on goal.

Women's soccer will have a week off before it hosts Chowan University on Friday, Oct. 8 at The Fields. The match has a 4 p.m. start time.
