Early Goal Gives Hornets Win Over SVU

WINCHESTER, Va. The Southern Virginia Women's Soccer team was looking to get a second win of the season, and move to .500 on the year, but an early Shenandoah goal proved to be all that the hosts would need, as they won 1-0. The Knights were slow to start, and were suffering the effects of playing a double-overtime game two days earlier. The Hornets were able to get the goal at the 8:42 mark of the first half. A Hornet shot was deflected by Mariah Flake, and the ball spun past the SVU defenders and in to the goal, for the winning point.

The Knights had started slowly, and had to work themselves back in to the game. Possession slowly swung the visitors way, and Laura Schow benefited from some good passing to get a shot just past the left post of the Hornet keeper. Maddie Wiscombe was a strong performer for the Knights, as she worked hard to set up the SVU offense.

The second half started with the Knights getting good looks at the goal, and Amber Key and Melanee Guymon were getting quality opportunities for the visitors. The scoreline however, would stand, and the hosts would record the third straight victory of the young season. SVU took 8-shots with two on goal, which was close to the 9-shots and four on goal for the Hornets.

SVU will look to regroup after falling to 1-3 on the season. A challenging match is upcoming, as the Knights will travel to Lynchburg, VA, for a third game against an NCAA D.I opponent in Liberty University. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
