The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team opened
their 2009 campaign, on the road against NCAA Division I foe South
Carolina State University. The 2008 defending USCAA National
Champions were looking to continue the winning streak that allowed
them to claim the trophy last fall, but were unable to overcome the
hosts in front of a raucous crowd in Bulldog Stadium, eventually
falling 0-3.
The Knights were quickly back on their heals as the Bulldogs scored
four minutes in to the game. A rear-guard action by Melanee Guymon
and Tamara Nagle helped SVU recover and go on the attack. Knight
freshman, Taylor Osborne was able to get a shot off soon after the
goal, and the Knights slowly crept back into the game, and held
their own against SCSU.
With ten minutes left in the first half the Knights were again
picking the ball out of the back of the net as SCSU was able to
score a rebound goal from a penalty kick. Freshman goalkeeper
Mariah Flake did an outstanding job in thwarting the first effort,
but was unable to react quickly enough to stop the following
shot.
Although the Knights were not happy, they were an optimistic group
as they headed in to the break. This changed though, within two
minutes of the start of the first half, as SVU gave up a free kick
outside the area, and was unable to clear the ball after it hit the
cross bar. The Bulldogs again pounced on the rebound, and tallied
the final goal of the game.
Knight coaches saw a lot of positives for the game, and saw plenty
of potential from the young team. SVU will get the chance to
rebound as they travel to Hollins University, Sept. 4. Game time is
set for 4:00 PM.
