Heim Leads Knights Over Trinity

WASHINGTON, D.C. Freshman Kendra Heim paced the SVU Women's Soccer team with two assists and a goal as the Knights beat Trinity 4-0. Heim provided the assists in the first half as she first put in a deadly cross to fellow Freshman Taylor Osborn for the opening and winning goal. The first goal came within the first ten minutes, and the Knights looked to add more quickly.

It was not long before the Trinity keeper was pulling the ball out of the net again as Heim provided a cross to the back post which Sophomore Melanee Guymon headed in. The score remained 2-0 for the remainder of the half.

"We had several quality chances to get more in that half," said Head Coach Matt Grawrock. "To rebound from a tough couple of games is an encouraging sign. We definitely showed the desire to win today."

The Knights looked to start the second half with quick goals, but the Tigers pressed early and put SVU under pressure. The defense, lead by Tamara Nagle, absorbed the pressure and went on the offensive. Halfway in to the second half, Heim finished off the game as she took a cross from Lauren Denhalter and slotted home to the far post.

"It was great buildup," said Grawrock. "We strung some good passes around, and then swung the right cross for Kendra to run on to."

SVU added an insurance goal a few minutes later, as great passing ended in a strong cross from Jaylynn Rust, and Amber Key hitting the ball past the keeper. The 4-0 score provided the Knights with an opportunity to play everybody, and also allowed Mariah Flake to record the second shutout of the year in goal.

"The last goal was fantastic," said Grawrock. "We played the way we were supposed to, and the results showed up. It's easy to forget we're young and still growing, but I am positive about our progress after today's results."

SVU will be back in action Sept. 21 as they host Mary Baldwin on the new SVU Athletic Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 when the Knights will look to improve on their 3-3 record.
