Guymon Double Not Enough For The Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. Melanee Guymon scored the first goal and the last against Mount Olive, but Southern Virginia Women's Soccer surrendered three goals in between and lost 3-2. Guymon's first came in the first five minutes of the game, and it looked like the hosts would get a win on Senior Day. The Trojans had different plans, and knotted up the game at 1-1 in the first half.

The reverse was true for the second half as Mount Olive scored in the early minutes of the half to take the lead. Heavy pressure was applied by the visitors, leading to the Knight defense playing a rear-guard action against constant pressure. Tamara Nagle led a competent defense, and helped establish an attack as the Knights recovered and pushed to find an equalizer.

"It is tough for a team to play well, and not get the results you're looking for," said Head Coach Matt Grawrock. "We stepped up our efforts after some disappointing performances, and I really wanted to get that win today. Melanee played great, as did Tamara. We got a good performance from Whitni Watkins, and Jessica Messman also played well. We just can't seem to get over that losing bug."

The Trojans were able to withstand the SVU pressure and in the 85th minute found a cushion, as they put away a ball and went up 3-1. The Knights did not fold, and were awarded with a free kick goal from Guymon with 2:30 left to go. Another Knight attack was thwarted, and the visitors left the field with the 3-2 win.

"I felt that we really played well today," said Grawrock. "We came out and were assertive, and we put together some nice offensive movement. Passes were clicking. But we got caught a couple of times, and we paid the price. Hopefully we can fix our errors and get a win Saturday."

The Knights now stand at 6-7-1 on the season. SVU honored its seniors who included Watkins, and student assistant coaches Candace Call and Courtney Montagna. SVU will be back in action Oct. 24 when they travel to play at University of Charleston. Game time has been moved from a previous 2:00 pm start time to a new 11:30 am start.
