Knights Rout Squirrels

BUENA VISTA, Va. A barrage of first half goals pushed the Southern Virginia Women's Soccer team to victory, as they beat Mary Baldwin 9-0. The Knights got goals from seven different players and raced to an 8-0 halftime lead.

"We came out strong in the first half, that's for sure," said Head Coach Matt Grawrock. "The biggest thing for us was to play our game, and the goals would come."

The goal scoring started early, as Kendra Heim received a superb pass from Rachel Riter to slot home past the Squirrel keeper. Four minutes later the Knights tallied another score as Tamara Nagle headed home a corner kick provided by Melanee Guymon. Taylor Osborn got on to the score sheet next as she hit a long looping shot that flew over the keeper in to the far net.

"It's comforting to see us close the door on a team quickly," said Grawrock. "We've had a few bumps so far when we have not closed out a game, and let another team stick around. Today, we struck fast and quickly, and that's a good sign of progression for the team."

Guymon got her own goal a minute after Osborn, as she dribbled through Squirrel defenders, and hit a shot under the advancing keeper. Kelsey Bridge struck for two more as she followed up on a scramble in the box for her first, and then received a strong cross from Heim to one time into the net.

Jaylynn Rust registered her first goal of the game at the 41:24 mark of the first. Emma Alkonis finished off the first half scoring as she received a ball from Jessica Messman and hit it past the Squirrel keeper.

The Knights slowed the scoring pace in the second half, but registered a brilliant goal as Lauren Denhalter placed a perfect cross for Osborn to head home, and finish up the scoring at nine.

"People might think it was nothing but goals for us, but I feel we made great strides in our passing game, and worked well to get quality chances, and not a quantity of chances," said Grawrock.

The Knights now stand at 4-3, and will look to extend their two-game winning streak when they travel to play at Chowan Sept. 23. Kickoff is at 2:00.
